Californian Lloyd Miller had decided he wanted to be a jazz musician by the time he was 12. He knew then that he didn’t want to be confined by convention either, ignoring the rules of swing and not taking up his parents offer of musical tuition. Travels to Hong Kong, Japan, Pakistan and Iran opened his eyes to other cultures and sounds. This all fed into what became Oriental Music. It was released in 1968 - in defiance of rock music which was de rigueur at the time - a genre Miller hated.
