First issued in Jamaica in 1974, Play Me Sweet and Nice became an instant best seller and reinforced Marcia Griffiths' standing as the island's leading lady of song. The album was subsequently picked up for release by Trojan, although its original title was deemed too risque for UK audiences and so re-titled Sweet Bitter Love. Now, over 30 years since its original release, the LP is finally available again and has been bolstered with a host of bonus tracks from the era, many of which have been unavailable since their original date of issue.
Amongst the extra tracks you’ll find the exquisite late-60s singles Melody Life and Mark My Word which, along with the sumptuous reading of Band Of Gold, are now £100 records, if you can find them! Just sayin’. There‘s also a fantastic version of The First Cut Is the Deepest and an alternate take of Play Me with producer Lloyd Charmers adding his own vocals. Everything’s been remastered of course, including the original LP, so Sweet And Nice now sounds even sweeter, and even nicer.
