2005
The debut album from m.i.a.. like her life story, there's hardly anything like it. it's a blaring, drum-machine driven mish-mash of vocal hooks and melodies that carry each song, glimpses of hip hop (especially crunk), ragga, bhangra, reggaeton, '80s electro, and even punk rock. everything comes assembled extremely well by producers diplo, richard x, ross orton (from fat truckers), and pulp's steve mackey. it's an amazing pan-global pop debut with street corner attitude, lyrics about terrorism, teenage prostitution, parties etc, raw beats and exotic collisions. this could be ones of the albums that defines 2005.
