Hailing from Queens, NYC, the original members of Onyx were discovered by the legendary Jam Master Jay of Run-D.M.C. Almost 30 years since their debut, Onyx still channel raw energy and undeniable boldness on their ninth studio album, Onyx Versus Everybody. Full of street tales, the 10-track LP features Big Twin, Ricky Bats, Harrd Luck and Termanology. For diehard fans of Onyx, this is one of the group's best projects in their legendary career. Sticky Fingaz attributes the swift recording process – lasting just two weeks – to the group's new song-writing process. "We didn't really write anything," he recalls; “we got a new technique where we just vibe and get on it.”
Producer Fredro cites 'Last Dayz’, from their sophomore album, as the inspiration behind the production on their new record. "'Last Dayz' is a hip-hop classic beat you know? It was in 8 Mile, and that made it even more legendary, so I wanted to get the vibe on the album," he says. This confidence extends to his disregard of drum machines – a hip- hop staple. "I don't even use a hi-hat. I play my own drums. I need it to be dirty. I got the nastiest, grimmest, beats in hip-hop." Onyx Versus Everybody’s gritty production and lyricism are a strong case for placing it among the best albums of 2022, but that isn't the recognition they seek. "Onyx Vs Everybody is the hottest, grimmest, dirtiest album of the year," Sticky Fingaz boasts. "I don't want the best album of the year. They can have that. This is the grimmest album of the year."
