Debut release from the London based Kanpai Quartet (on their own label) combines the compositional flair of late 60’s/early 70’s library music with the energy and receptiveness of the contemporary London jazz scene. For this single the band joined forces with veteran drummer/producer Malcolm Catto (The Heliocentrics) who engineered and mixed the record at his Quatermass Sound Lab.
Rick James Dwells in the Abyss is the band’s groovy homage to a Charlie Murphy quote, featuring percussive wah-wah guitar, a driving disco beat and buzz flute solo. The deeper Pearly Gates on the B-side features smooth Rhodes sounds with bass and guitar solos of equal polish.
