In the mid-1980s, much British critical fanfare was foisted on Australia's holy triumvirate of Nick Cave, the Go-Betweens and - most enigmatic of them all - the Triffids. Led by doomed romantic David McComb, the band recorded their 1986 classic album in London, but the immaculate lyrics seem rooted in the Australian outback. Over eerily majestic guitars and strings and darkly anthemic tunes, McComb unloads tales of lives being lost in wide open spaces.
