Featuring 35 rare archival tracks drawn from 10’’ and 78 rpm “native records” recorded in Kenya and Uganda between 1938 and 1957, then pressed in England by EMI before being returned to East Africa for sale, this delightful and diverse collection opens a window on a long-lost world. Roughly divided among minstrel pieces, percussion ensembles, and lilting taarab love songs full of violins and Indian harmoniums, Something Is Wrong (the collection was originally issued as two LPs) has an eerie, wonderful vitality to it, and the package and presentation is top-notch, making this unique release a true treasure.
